Itinerary

Day 1 of 8
Arrival & Briefing

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, hotel check-in and a full equipment check and mountain briefing with your guide, covering the route, pacing and what to expect at altitude.

Machame Gate - Machame Camp

The climb begins at Machame Gate, climbing steadily through montane rainforest thick with moss and birdsong to Machame Camp. It is a good introduction to the guide team's 'pole pole' (slowly, slowly) pace, which does more for a successful summit than speed ever does.

Machame Camp - Shira Camp

The trail climbs out of the forest onto the moorland of the Shira Plateau, an open, high-altitude expanse with the first real views back across the plains and ahead to Kibo's summit cone. Camp is set on the plateau itself, noticeably colder once the sun drops.

Shira - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp

A 'climb high, sleep low' acclimatization day: the route rises to the Lava Tower at around 4,600 metres before descending into the dramatic Barranco Valley, where giant senecio plants stand against the cliff walls. Sleeping at a lower altitude than the day's high point helps the body adjust.

Barranco - Barafu Camp

The day opens with the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical scramble that looks more intimidating from below than it feels underfoot, then continues across ridges and valleys to Barafu Camp, the exposed, rocky base for the summit push.

Summit Attempt - Uhuru Peak - Millennium Camp

A midnight start, climbing switchbacks in the dark and cold toward Stella Point on the crater rim, then along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, usually reached around sunrise. The long descent afterward continues all the way to Millennium Camp.

Millennium Camp - Mweka Gate - Hotel

The final descent passes back through forest to Mweka Gate, where certificates are issued, before a transfer to your hotel for a hot shower and a proper meal.
