Itinerary

Day 1 of 9
Arusha Arrival

Arrival in Arusha and overnight, with a briefing on how the itinerary will track the migration's position that week.

Tarangire National Park

A game drive in Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is famous above all for its elephants, herds that can number in the hundreds gather here through the dry months, moving between the Tarangire River and the surrounding bush. The park is also home to one of Africa's densest concentrations of baobab trees, some centuries old, their swollen trunks a distinctive backdrop to almost every photograph. Expect buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a good chance of lion on the day's game drive, along with excellent birdlife along the riverbanks.

Transfer to Serengeti

The drive into the Serengeti crosses open plains that give an early sense of the park's scale, with game viewing continuing along the way as the landscape opens out. Arrival is typically timed to allow an afternoon game drive on the day of arrival, making the most of the light before settling in for the following full days in the park.

Serengeti / Northern Serengeti

Time in the Serengeti and Northern Serengeti is routed to follow where the Great Migration and its predators are that particular week, since the herds move constantly with the rains and available grazing. This stretch is where the famous Mara River crossings happen in season, and even outside crossing season the concentration of wildebeest, zebra, lion and hyena along the northern plains makes for exceptional game viewing.

Serengeti / Northern Serengeti

A second day following the migration's movement, with routing adjusted daily based on where the herds and predators are concentrated.

Serengeti / Northern Serengeti

A third day dedicated to the migration, covering the Northern Serengeti's river crossing points when the herds are in the area.

Serengeti - Ngorongoro

A final stretch of game driving through the Serengeti gives way to a scenic climb up onto the Ngorongoro highlands, with the crater itself first coming into view from the rim before you settle in for the night at the edge of the caldera.

Ngorongoro Crater

The descent into the Ngorongoro Crater drops you into a self-contained world roughly 260 square kilometres wide, ringed by 600-metre walls that keep a remarkable density of wildlife within easy reach. This is one of the most reliable places in Tanzania to find all of the Big Five in a single day, including the crater's small, closely protected population of black rhino. Grassland, swamp, acacia woodland and the shimmering soda expanse of Lake Magadi all sit inside the caldera, and Maasai herders still graze cattle across parts of the floor.

Return to Arusha

With the parks behind you, the drive back to Arusha gives time to reflect on the safari before transfers to the airport or your onward accommodation.
