Small, green and often overlooked, Arusha National Park sits in the shadow of Mount Meru and packs montane forest, the Ngurdoto Crater and the string of Momella Lakes into an easy day trip from town.

You will not find lion here, but giraffe, buffalo, bushbuck and big troops of black and white colobus monkeys are common, and it is one of the few Tanzanian parks where you can walk with an armed ranger or paddle a canoe among the hippos.
