Zanzibar Archipelago

Best Season: June to October and December to February, between the long and short rains.
Climate: Warm tropical coast, sea breezes most afternoons.
Tanzania, Indian Ocean Coast

Zanzibar is where most safaris end, and for good reason. The islands offer soft white sand, a warm reef for snorkelling and diving, spice farms that gave the archipelago its old name of the Spice Islands, and the coral stone lanes of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site layered with Swahili, Arab, Indian and European history.

Three or four nights is enough to slow down properly after the mainland.

Highlights

  • Stone Town, a living UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Spice farm tours and Swahili cooking
  • Reef diving and the Safari Blue dhow trip
  • Long, quiet beaches on the north and east coasts
Climate

Warm tropical coast, sea breezes most afternoons.
