Lake Manyara National Park

Best Season: June to October for game viewing, November to June for birding and waterfalls.
Climate: Warm and humid near the lake, cooler up on the escarpment.
Tanzania, Northern Circuit

Manyara packs a surprising range of habitats into a narrow strip between the Rift Valley wall and the lake shore: groundwater forest fed by underground springs, open floodplain, acacia woodland and the alkaline lake itself, often pink with flamingo.

It is best known for its tree climbing lions, an unusual local habit, and it works well as a half day on the way to or from the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Highlights

  • Tree climbing lions
  • Large flamingo flocks on the lake
  • A shaded groundwater forest walk
  • Rift Valley escarpment views
Climate

Warm and humid near the lake, cooler up on the escarpment.
