Tarangire National Park

Best Season: June to October, when the dry season pulls wildlife to the river.
Climate: Semi-arid savannah, hot by day and mild at night.
Tanzania, Northern Circuit

Tarangire is the northern circuit's quiet achiever. In the dry months the Tarangire River becomes the only reliable water for miles, and elephant herds several hundred strong move through the ancient baobabs to reach it, along with buffalo, zebra, giraffe and the predators that follow them.

It sees a fraction of the vehicles that the Serengeti and Ngorongoro do, which makes for a more private safari, and its birdlife, more than 500 recorded species, is among the richest in Tanzania.

Highlights

  • Some of the largest elephant herds in Tanzania
  • Baobab trees many centuries old
  • Dry season game drives along the river
  • Over 500 bird species
Climate

Semi-arid savannah, hot by day and mild at night.
