Ngorongoro is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, a 260 square kilometre bowl with walls rising 600 metres above a floor of grassland, swamp, soda lake and acacia forest. That enclosed geography concentrates wildlife to a degree found almost nowhere else.
A single day on the crater floor can turn up all of the Big Five, including the black rhino that have become so hard to see elsewhere in East Africa. Maasai still bring their cattle down to graze, one of the few places people and wildlife share protected land this closely.
