The Serengeti is the reason many travelers come to Tanzania in the first place. Its short grass plains, granite kopjes and riverine woodland support one of the densest concentrations of large mammals left on the planet, and the resident lion, cheetah and leopard populations are exceptional.
Running through it all is the Great Migration, the year round movement of close to two million wildebeest and zebra. Where you stay matters: the south for calving season, the west and north for the dramatic river crossings between June and October.
Semi-arid. Warm, dry days and cool evenings for most of the year.
